iPhone 5G

iPhone 5G

We have received several reports that Apple is strengthening ties with the company Nuance to develop voice recognition software. It is hoped that this will allow them to match and hopefully supersede such capabilities as exist on Google's Android iphone 5g.

Existing voice recognition software on iOS has been in the past provided by Microsoft, however as it developed an inferior reputation to Google's Android's abilities it seems that this development is an attempt by Apple to strengthen its place as industry leader in the phone market.

Competition between Apple and Google has become increasingly fierce over the past couple of years; with Apple adding Microsoft Bing support and it's own 'Google Maps' clone, it has increasingly come to see Google as it's prime competitor rather than partner.

It is in this context that this move must be seen and it's likely that rather than any strategic disagreement between Apple and Microsoft, Apples move towards Nuance is simply due to them being able to design better software.

Rumors on the internet are also declaring that Apples massive data center in North Carolina is already utilizing Nuance voice recognition technology and that this integration occurred in defiance of Microsoft demands that their software be better integrated into iOS5.

Running Nuance software in Apples data center is beneficial for numerous  reasons, firstly it allows them to build upon the software as they see fit, without having to run it through third party servers first. It would also allow them to process data much faster, compared to having to send data to Nuance servers and then wait for it to come back again.

So why did Apple decide to partner with Nuance? The answer to this is is to do with who owns the patents that underlay voice recognition technology, the vast majority of them belonging to Nuance and Google. Given the fact that almost all the worlds voice recognition experts work for these two companies, Apple didn't really have a choice in going with Nuance if they were to develop new and Google beating software.

What this all means for Apple fans anticipating the WWDC coming up this summer is that the Apple/Nuance partnership is likely to play a big role in Apples new cloud initiative which is set to be a huge part of iOS5. Whether prospective developers will get any further insight to this at the WWDC is as of yet to be known.

iPhone 5 To Get Curved Display Glass And LTE 4G In 2012?

iPhone 5 To Get Curved Display Glass And LTE 4G In 2012?

Read Charles Moore's new reflection on rumors that the iPhone 5 will feature a curved glass display and the coveted 4G in 2012.

I'm seriously dating myself by revealing that I remember well Volkswagen's introduction of the new Super Beetle model in 1971 with a curved, mildly wraparound windshield. All VW Beetles previously had had completely flat windshield glass, so the curvature was considered highly revolutionary.

I took a new Super Beetle belonging to a friend for a test drive and recall noticing how much better it rode and handled with its completely different suspension system, and the gracefully curved windscreen did much to eliminate the impression of viewing the world through a letterbox slot. The Super Beetle is my favorite VW Beetle of all time (I'll take a Cabriolet Champagne Edition by preference, thanks), the most recent example I've driven being a hotrod built by my daughter and her friend as a bare chassis up project, with a twin-Weber carburated Porsche engine and Porsche alloy wheels, as well as a rock hard suspension that makes it handle and corner like a go-kart — at least on smooth roads. It's seriously demanding to drive, but one seriously hot Beetle.

iPhone 5 curved glass screen like an old VW BeetleCurved glass: cool on the old VW Beetle — how about the iPhone 5?

Anyway, I thought of the curved-windshield VW announcement of 40 years ago when I read a DigiTimes report by Yenting Chen and Steve Shen noting that the latest scuttlebutt being circulated around the OEM componentry supply chain in Taiwan is that Apple is fixing to adopt a curved cover glass for the iPhone5 according to DigiTimes customary unnamed industry sources.

However, Chen and Shen report that cover glass makers are reluctant to invest in the necessary glass cutting equipment due to high capital cost, so, Apple itself has reportedly purchased 200-300 glass cutting machines to be used by glass makers, or so the sources affirm, currently storing them at associated assembly plants to be brought into production service once yield rates for curved glass reaches a satisfactory level, and further that there's still been no timetable set for iPhone 5g volume production, at least in part because Apple is currently still working out logistics issues with suppliers including ones involved in cover glass, glass cutting, lamination and touch sensors to improve yield rates.

So why would Apple want a curved iPhone display? Unlike the Super Beetle windscreen of yore, a curved iPhone screen would seem to not offer any obvious advantages, and actually seems sort of like a step backward, since the curved

iPhone 5 HTC curved screenCurved design concepts like this one from HTC can make for more ergonomic phone calls — but is it a good idea for a touch screen?

screen glass of CRT computer monitors long since gave way to flat plane displays almost universally acclaimed to be an improvement. One rumor I heard suggested it might have something to do with 3D, working like some sort of lens.

And while we're at it, DigiTimes' Amanda Liang and Adam Hwang have posted a new report sayingthat China Mobile, China's largest mobile telecom carrier, has reached an agreement with Apple for China Mobile to develop an iPhone model based on TD-LTE which to be offered in 2012, citing comments by China Mobile chairman Wang Jian-zhou at the company's 2011 shareholders meeting on May 19, according to a report in the Chinese newspaper Southern Metropolis Daily.

In an earlier report, Digitimes' Irene Chen and Steve Shen noted that Apple is unlikely to launch LTE-enabled iPhone 4S smartphones in 2011 as originally planned due to problems concerning yield rates of LTE chips offered by Qualcomm.

Many thanks to all of the folks yesterday who sent in links to stories about this rumored new feature for the iPhone 5! iPhone 5′ers are the best at keeping up on all things iPhone!

What do you think the purpose of a curved screen might be on the iPhone 5? Cool looks? Ergonomics? And how would it affect gesture control on the touch screen? Let us know what you think!

Planny iPhone App Review – No Frills Planning

Planny iPhone App Review – No Frills Planning

For me to use a to-do list on a regular basis it has to be easily accessible, simple to use and very reliable.  My life is not so complex that I need anything hugely complicated, and my job requires the same thing each day, so I rarely need to plan much in advance.  To this end, the standard Calendar app on my iPhone is ideal as not only is it simple and easy to use, but it syncs with my Mac too.

If I were to swap over to a new planner, the app would have to be something very special indeed.  Will Planny be that app?  Let's find out.

Released at the beginning of April, Planny promises to be a streamlined organizer that makes the most of the touchscreen interface.  As with most organizers, when you start the app you're presented with a daily view split into hours, with the option of viewing your calendar by month too.  Handily you can set the hours displayed on a single page to those of your work, so there's no unnecessary swiping.

Events appear inside circles  – although can be altered to a square, heart or hexagon – and a double tap shows all the relevant information.  Each appointment can be assigned a start time and a title, plus there is the option to add notes, set an alert or schedule a repeat.

With your appointment saved, you can assign a priority level.  This is then visually indicated on the daily view by both color – green for low importance, blue for medium and red for high priority – and by how high up the screen the appointment is.  This makes spotting the most important things in your day very easy, and is the best thing about Planny.  Switching to calendar view adds a small number alert on any days with appointments added.

If you need to move an appointment to a later time, you can tap and drag it across the screen to a new time, another excellent time saver.  At this point, Planny was proving useful, however, things stared to take a turn for the negative when I delved a little deeper.  That appointment I'd just dragged to a new time?  Fine if it's on the same day, but if the appointment has moved to the next day, you have to fiddle about in the menu system.  I would have much preferred the ability to drag it over to the next calendar page manually.

Then there is the adding of a new appointment.  When you've been through everything and clicked 'save' – which happens far too often – you're returned to the current day planner; so if you want to check the appointment has been saved you have to either swipe through or visit the calendar overview.  Seeing as there is a Now button to return the view to the present day, I would have preferred to see what I'd just added and compare it with other events of that day.

But the biggest problem for Planny is the way it handles more than one appointment at the same time on the same day.  Instead of clearly overlapping them, it piles them up with very little indication there's more than one appointment for that time, especially if they're all the same level of priority.  This could lead to overbooking and missed appointments – defeating the point of an organizer!

These may seem like little niggles, but as I mentioned from the start, I need the least annoying system possible if I'm to use a planner – and although Planny started out well, I soon returned to the standard Calendar.  However, Planny gains a point for being a free app, and provided your schedule isn't very busy or that likely to alter much, it's a perfectly serviceable organizer.

Positives:

  • Fast recognition of important tasks.
  • Easy to drag appointments to new times on the same day.
  • No setup, minimal menus.

Negatives:

  • Difficult to spot multiple appointments for the same time with the same priority.
  • Appointments can't be dragged to another day.
  • Not very visually impressive.

Overall: 3/5

Two Versions of the iPhone 5 to be Released

Two Versions of the iPhone 5 to be Released

The latest information we have been hearing about the iPhone 5 is that it will have 2 different versions released. An Apple parts supplier has stated that Apple has been ordering two sets of every component in varying quality. This leads us to believe their will be a Standard version of the iPhone 5, as well as a Pro version with a higher quality design as well as a higher price tag. We won't know exactly what Apple is doing until we are a bit closer to the release date. We are still expecting a September release in the United States. We expect a slightly delayed release for Canada, which will likely see the iPhone 5 in October or November.

Screw iPhone 5 rumors, the nano may be getting games

Screw iPhone 5 rumors, the nano may be getting games

iPod nano rumors seem to be heating up this week. It started with a "leaked" nano case that shows off a rear-facing camera. Now, a patent has surfaced that shows the iPod nano not only gaining a camera, but also motion sensors and games.

Yup, you read that right.Video games on your nano. It wouldn't be the first time that Apple managed to sneak games onto an iPod with a small screen. The original iPod shipped with a hidden edition of Brick, a game originally developed by Steve Wozniak. Down the road Apple also added Parachute, Solitaire, and Music Quiz. Then it was officially game on time. Apple announced in September 2006 that games would be coming to the iTunes store and would include 9 other games for the iPod, including Bejewled. Again, it should be noted that these games did not require iOS and shipped long before both iPod touch and iPhone.

ipod nano Screw iPhone 5 rumors, the nano may be getting games

It seems that Apple's at least thinking about bringing games of this variety back to the iPod nano. Not every patent filed by Apple comes to fruition, so there's also a chance that this doesn't happen at all. That being said, there are a couple of things I wouldn't mind seeing in a new updated iPod nano.

  1. FaceTime. The ability to take FaceTime calls from my iWatch would fantastic.
  2. iOS notifications. James Gifford brought this one up in the comments a couple of days ago. The more I think of it, the more I think he's on to something. Imagine getting your iOS notifications to your iWatch? Missed calls, appointment reminders, and text messages would be fantastic on my wrist. FANTASTIC.

SharkEye iPhone Case Review and Video

SharkEye iPhone Case Review and Video

Is it really possible to use a rugged iPhone 4 case everyday?  For me, the downside of cases which offer almost complete protection for your phone is the additional size and bulk – I just don't want to carry them around.  I always knew there would be a sweet spot, where the phone is kept safe without sacrificing its portability, and I think the SharkEye may have found it.

The SharkEye comes in three pieces, with a top and bottom section encapsulating the device and a third, central part containing a clever screen protector.  This is where the SharkEye gets its name, as it works like the protective membrane that slides over a shark's eye in moments of danger. Before we get into the way it works, we need to assemble the case and identify how it protects your phone.  Inside the very top and bottom sections of the case is a soft elastomer lining, which is anything up to 5mm thick in some places, acting as an absorbent cushion and protecting the corners of the phone.

You slot the iPhone 4 into the base first, then slide the screen protector assembly on, before finally adding the large top section and clicking it all into place.  It's actually a bit fiddly as the screen protector has a tendency to get caught on the casing, but once the phone is inside and you've given it a squeeze, it's securely held together by a big clip.

The elastomer lining covers the volume buttons, Home button and sleep/wake key, plus there are flaps for the 30-pin connector and the headphone jack.  Only the speakers and the mute switch are uncovered, but are deep inside the body of the case itself.  The case is made from stiff, textured plastic which adds grip, but perhaps doesn't feel as pleasing to the touch as glossy polycarbonate can.

The SharkEye's party piece is the retractable cover of the screen.  By using a slider in the rear of the case you can open and close the 'garage door' over the top of the screen.  The motion is clean and smooth, and if you've got big enough hands it's easy to close the cover using one hand; however opening it really requires two.

SharkEye has demonstrated that the cover can protect the screen from a steel ball being dropped on it from nearly 40″, so although it doesn't look all that tough, in reality it is!  The same goes for the rest of the SharkEye, as it feels very sturdy in the hand, and knowing about that soft lining adds considerable peace of mind.

For me though, what made the SharkEye the best rugged case I've used was how little it added to the size and weight of the phone.  An iPhone 4 wrapped up inside the SharkEye weighs 196 grams, up from 137 grams, and the case adds only around 10mm to each of its dimensions.  Considering the level of protection the SharkEye provides, keeping it pocketable is quite an achievement.

I've been using the SharkEye for a little over a week now, and have enjoyed the security it offers my phone, plus I've not once wanted to swap it over for a smaller, lighter case; as it just hasn't felt intrusive.  The look has grown on me too, although its uninteresting shape won't appeal to everyone.  Using the SharkEye's screen cover has become second nature, and this clever system is far more preferable than a built-in screen protector seen on other tough cases.

The only time I found the SharkEye a pain was when using the very edges of the phone's screen, as it's quite deep inside the case and the lip around the edge is not only quite big, but a bit sharp too.  I noticed this while playing some games – Angry Birds, DrawRace and Speedball 2: Evolution were particular standouts – and when typing quickly.  For typing I just took some more care, but for longer periods of gaming, it was better to take it out.

When considering my final thoughts on the SharkEye, I realized why I liked it more than others, and it's because it doesn't really feel like a super-tough rugged case.  Instead of looking like it belongs on the dashboard of a Humvee, the SharkEye looks at home on the table at your local coffee shop, plus it's easily slipped into your pocket when you leave.  Considering the protection the SharkEye does offer, this is a great achievement and a huge recommendation.

The Data Plan Dilemma Gets Uglier: Verizon To Drop Unlimited Plans Ahead of iPhone 5 Release

The Data Plan Dilemma Gets Uglier: Verizon To Drop Unlimited Plans Ahead of iPhone 5 Release

Data transfer is the lifeblood of smartphone usage — and the thing that sends mobile phone bills (and tempers) through the roof. New news of Verizon canceling its unlimited data plan ahead of the iPhone 5 release joins a recent report that AT&T is overcharging for data usage on the iPhone and iPad 2 review. When will the data gouging stop?

As the summer heats up, people might have more to stress about than the rising price of gasoline — a pair of news stories have surfaced this week concerning data plans on America's top mobile carries — AT&T and Verizon — and how iPhone users are systematically getting as gouged at the "data pump" as they are the gas pump.

The iPhone 5 News Blog posted an article earlier in the week about a class-action lawsuit filed against AT&T for purportedly overcharging all 20 million of their  iPhone and iPad users for "phantom" data transfers when the devices are not even in use, leading to bills that are anywhere from 7% to 300% higher than what they should be. Clearly, stories like this raise the level of concern on the part of prospective iPhone 5 customers, who fear that new features such as a cloud storage, NFC, and the 4G network (likely to debut in the iPhone 6), will only exacerbate data transfer usage. In our previous article, we postulated that the next shoe to drop on this developing story would focus on Verizon.

Well, the second shoe has dropped.

Tech media outlet ZDNET is reporting that, according to Verizon CEO Fran Shammo, their "unlimited data plans would be replaced by tiered service plans aimed at heavy users. Verizon's tiered data plans would likely mimic AT&T's own, which offer 250MB of data for $15 per month and 2GB for $25." This news comes ahead of the eventual release of the iPhone5 (or "iPhone 4s" as some have suggested it will be called), as well as several new Android phones that will have 4G LTE functionality. While consensus still remains that the next iPhone will now be a 4G smartphone, there are other possible features, such as cloud storage and NFC, which could lead to exponentially more data usage from iPhone users. It would seem that, in light of these possible new features, Verizon is positioning itself to gouge iPhone 5g users as they are potentially forced to swap data at much higher rates.

Data Plans: Moving In the Wrong Direction

Over the years, telecom-related plans have always moved from incremental billing to flat rate billing. Think about it: early Internet access on services like AOL were billed hourly, but eventually were forced to move to a flat rate billing model. The same has been true with long distance phone calls, with most land line voice plans replacing minute-by-minute billing with a flat rate.

Data plans, however, seem to be moving in the opposite direction.

With this news of Verizon abandoning unlimited data plans, smartphone users will be forced to scrutinize their own mobile Internet usage (particularly in our weak economy), much in the same way that mobile phone users have struggled to keep track of their "minutes" of phone usage. But as more and more mobile plans include either unlimited or high-level voice usage allowances, it is clear that carriers like Verizon and AT&T are looking for new ways to raise revenues, and hitting smartphone users up for data usage is clearly the new cash cow.

What the larger companies like Verizon and AT&T are failing to recognize is that they are giving price-leading mobile networks like Sprint the opportunity to undercut them on data plan pricing in the future. In the past, when Internet providers like AOL switched from hourly billing to flat rate pricing, it was a viable and necessary move, since more and more people were getting "online" every month; there were enough newcomers to the Internet experience to allow AOL to make more money with flat rate pricing, since it would attract more new customers.

But with an already established smartphone customer in place worldwide, carriers like Verizon would seemingly have more to lose by nixing their flat rate data plan, ostensibly losing that edge over their fiercest competitor, AT&T, and encouraging their own iPhone users to conserve and script on their data usage. And what if Sprint gets the iPhone 5? In spite of the fact that Sprint uses the slower CDMA technology, wouldn't the iPhone 5 paired with Sprint's Simply Everything plan look attractive compared to Verizon and AT&T nickel and diming iPhone 5 users on data?

Data plans are getting increasingly ugly for iPhone users, and it looks like the trend toward data gouging is only going to increase as the iPhone 5 looms closer.

IPhone 5 rumours

IPhone 5 rumours

In recent times, there have been a lot of iPhone 5 rumors as everyone is speculating about the upgrades to expect with this new device. Perhaps the biggest rumor to date would be about the release date. Some of the timelines in the reports are for somewhere between June to October, according to production time and the availability of several parts.

Here are some of the most likely features of iPhone 5:

The popular white models are anticipated to be available with this new device. Similar to the instantaneous availability of the iPad 2 Review, this new device should have the white models ready from the first day.

Users can also expect to have even more internal memory storage, which includes the likelihood of a model with 64 GB.

It is believed that Verizon users will get this new device simultaneously with AT&T users. One cannot really think of a good reason why this would not be the case.

The general opinion of the techies is that iPhone5 is going to have a similar design like the iPhone 4 model. It might be a bit slimmer with a greater screen, but the general form will stay the same.

There are also rumors about improved recording for camera and video, plus a much faster processor. The HDMI Output is expected to much better. Besides that, an integrated NFC technology could deliver mobile payments straight to the iPhone 5. Note that this can be a dangerous thing for shoppers!

The following are some of the maybes:

All the internal memory storage will be in a virtual iTunes cloud, obtainable by a 3G/4G or wireless network, which could be a cool concept. There is still an ongoing debate about whether or not iPhone 5g is going to work on 4G /LTE network. This would mean much faster connectivity and internet speeds.

If the rumors are true, users can forget about the home button as it would be substituted for a sensitive touch area. Most users are anticipating that the new design is what they have been looking forward to, such as one that is similar to iPad 2 with the same appearance and feel.

Avid users of iPhone normally drain the battery life much faster. As a result, most users are looking forward to a battery life that can last for much longer.

Finally, with all the IPhone 5 rumors around one can only dream of getting all the improved features and functions that they desire. It is said that Apple has recently obtained a patent for the 3-D screen technology, which means that the 3-D effect will be available on screen.

Ten Reasons Why The iOS Is Better Than Android, And Will Toshiba's New 4″ Display Show Up In iPhone 5?

Read Charles Moore's new report on how Apple may be putting Toshiba's new 4″ screen into the iPhone 5, plus 10 reasons why iOS still rules over Android.

Perhaps you're one of a growing number of prospective smartphone buyers or upgraders who's considering going with an Android handset instead of waiting for the iPhone5. If so, you might thank yourself for taking a look at a new column by LifeHacker's Adam Dachis, entitled "Top 10 Ways iOS Outdoes Android," before making the leap.

Adam isn't an Android-basher or Apple partisan, declaring that he loves both of these mobile operating systems and their corresponding hardware, and affirming that both operating systems have their respective strengths and weaknesses, but that in some areas he's convinced that the iOS outdoes Android. Worth checking to see whether they're ones that resonate with your needs and tastes.

In summary they are:
10. The iTunes Media Store
9. AirPlay
8. Find My iPhone
7. A Better Support System
6. Better Battery Life and Management
5. iTunes and Tethered Syncing
4. No Crapware
3. A Bigger and Better Variety of Apps
2. A Well-Designed, Intuitive User Interface
1. Consistency

If these ten reason why iOS still outshines Android sound like advantages that would be important to you, check out the complete discussion and explanation of why they are included on this list here, and let us know what you think.

Will Toshiba's New 4″ Smartphone Display Find Its Way Into The iPhone 5?

At the 2011 Society for Information Display (SID) conference held in in Los Angeles last week, Toshiba unveiled new high-resolution LTPS (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) smartphone displays, featuring up to 367ppi (pixels per inch) resolution density, in physical sizes ranging from 3.3-inch to 4.0-inch diagonal and supporting resolution formats ranging from Wide VGA (480 x 864) to HD (720 x 1280). Additionally, these displays will demonstrate advanced technologies such as high-contrast (up to 1,500:1), high-color (up to 92% NTSC), and wide viewing angle (up to H/V 176/176).

Toshiba's SID announcements of course beg the question of whether these new display technologies and particularly 4″-sized screens might find their way into a future iPhone version — perhaps even the iPhone 5g, although it's highly doubtful the rumored iPhone 4S, if that turns out to be the next iPhone 5 release later this year, will get a 4″ display.

How Does AT&T Detect Unofficial iPhone Tethering?

How Does AT&T Detect Unofficial iPhone Tethering?

As we've reported earlier, AT&T continues to clamp down on unofficial iPhone tethering, which is one of the main reasons users jailbreak their iPhone.

There has been a lot of debate and speculation on how AT&T detects the unofficial iPhone tethering. Android Police has provided some insight into how AT&T is able to identify users who are using the unofficial tethering option. Android Police explains:

Jailbroken iPhones typically use the same tethering technique as a standard iPhone, the one that's already present in iOS. This method exposes tethering activity quite readily, because the iPhone, when in tethering mode, sends traffic through an alternate APN (AT&T access point/router) for the express purpose of identifying the traffic as tethered data. This makes it extremely easy for AT&T to identify whether or not an iOS device is utilizing tethering, and just how much of their data is consumed via tethering.

Some tethering applications for iOS make use of alternative methods and route tethered traffic through the phone's normal data APN, but by and large, most jailbreakers stick with the stock application because it's easy to use and doesn't require any complicated setup. In fact, many iPhone users jailbreak for the sole purpose of avoiding AT&T's tethering fees (for why, see next section). These are the people AT&T's is going after.

According to Android Police, popular jailbreak apps such as MyWi and Tetherme use the tethering APN instead of using the normal data APN.

It's not clear if PdaNet that has been updated recently to hide unofficial tethering by masking the packets uses iPhone's normal data APN to go undetected (assuming it does). If PdaNet's solution works then we're quite sure that other developers will soon release an updated version of their jailbreak apps to stay ahead of the cat and mouse game with AT&T.

It is unfortunate that carriers are charging users for the tethering option or don't allow some features or apps to work to use iPhone's 3G data connection (work only over Wi-Fi). Ideally, we should be able to use the data the way we want as we've paid for it.

The iPhone 5 is still on the clock, and those waiting for it will begin grading the results on a curve if it takes longer to arrive than previous iPhone iterations. From the fact that Apple is still launching new iPhone 4 iterations to the various claims of iPhone 5 delays to the lack of any production information, it's increasingly probable that the fifth generation iPhone will launch closer to fall 2011 than to summer. And that means that it had better be worth the wait in the eyes of those who will consider such a delay to have been pointless otherwise. Here are five features which would, if not by themselves then all combined, make the iPhone5 worth waiting for, even on an extended countdown clock.

Curves: The simplest trick Apple can pull off with the iPhone 5 is not just to make it thinner overall, which requires miniaturization of internal components, but to simply round off the corners. The flat-sided iPad 1 gave way to the curved-sided iPad 2 review, and it's been one of the most praised features of the second generation tablet. Apple can do the same with the iPhone 5g, rounding off those flat iPhone 4 sides which have always made the otherwise svelte model look and feel thicker than it actually is.

Colors: Forget just black and white. While other smartphone makers are limiting themselves to the two extremes of the greyscale spectrum, Apple could bust out additional colors. It already does so with the iPod nano. Imagine an iPhone 5 in green, blue, or purple – or at the least, a (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 5 special edition.

Capacity: There's a 64 GB iPod touch but not a 64 GB iPhone. That's simple enough for Apple to rectify with the iPhone 5, and almost shocking that it hasn't fixed this discrepancy earlier.

Screen: Can the iPhone 5 really be a more useful device simply by stretching the screen of the iPhone 4 screen width a few millimeters out to the outer edges of the device? Let's find out.

Software: iOS 4 was at least half of what made the iPhone 4 a worthy upgrade. iOS 5 should be the same story with the iPhone 5, and in fact may be the reaso for the delay. If Apple ensures that iOS 5 makes the iPhone 5 worth waiting longer for, then all could be enthusiastically forgiven. Here's more on the iPhone 5 news.

iPhone 5 Release or iPhone 4S Release

iPhone 5 Release or iPhone 4S Release

Does the speculation over when the iPhone 5 will see the light of day ever stop? Earlier we posted an article which claims the next generation iPhone is delayed until October, and now we have a claim that according to certain analysis that the iPhone5 or iPhone 4S whichever it turns out to be will release in June/July rather than September.

According to an article over on Online Social Media, by way of iClarified, Andy Zack of Seeking Alpha claims that analysis of Apple's quarterly guidance apparently reveals, " Apple will release the next iPhone in June/July rather than in September."

Apparently during the Q2 conference call Peter Oppenheimer, Apple CFO said, "We expect OpEx [operating expenses] to be about $2.5 billion, including about $255 million related to stock-based compensation expense."

However according to Zack "Oppenheimer might as well have said, "Despite what you might hear on Wall Street, we expect the iPhone 5 4G to be released in late June or early July as planned."

Why Oppenheimer's statement translates into a "late June or early July" release for the iPhone 5g escapes me, but one thing is for sure, the iPhone 5 apple/4S will release only when Apple confirms it will release, and all else is simply speculation, but it does get somewhat confusing at times don't you agree?

iPhone 5G Case Design Shows Redesigned Camera Flash

iPhone 5G Case Design Shows Redesigned Camera Flash

GadgetsDNA points to a new Chinese case design found on Alibaba that claims to be for the "iPhone 5G".
1.100% brand new high quality crystal case for iphone 5g .
2. Provides a comfortable grip, added protection against accidental drops .
3. Perfectly fits the iPhone 5 g, easy to insert and remove .
What's unusual about the case is that it seems to depict a very thin-bezel design as well as a distinct camera design. (It should be noted that their iPhone 4 "crystal" designs also have little in the way of bezels") The camera flash appears to be on the opposite side of the case rather than adjacent to the camera itself.

While there's been talk of these more dramatic changes, the most recent reports have claimed that the next iPhone will actually only contain minor cosmetic differences over the iPhone 4.

It's possible we could see these design elements in the future if not the next release, as the iPod Touch camera was found in case designs a full release cycle ahead of the ultimate release.

Update: It should be noted that their iPhone 4 "crystal" cases also share the same thin edge, so the camera design alone may be main difference in the new iPhone case design. This would fit with the "minor cosmetic differences" described in the previous report.

iPhone 5 To Possibly Feature Curved Glass

iPhone 5 To Possibly Feature Curved Glass

The speculation continues about what the next generation iPhone may or may not feature today with the rumour that the iPhone 5 could possibly come out to play packing a curved glass display like that seen on the Samsung Nexus S, and as Apple has previously used curved glass on the previous generation of the iPod Nano there is a possibility that this rumour could hold some substance.

According to an article over on Cult of Mac by way of Macrumors, this latest iPhone 5 speculation comes via DigiTimes claims that according to unnamed industry sources Apple is going to adopt curved glass for the iPhone 5g, or iPhone 4S as some are calling the device.

Apparently the word is the high cost of the tech to product curved glass makes glassmakers reluctant to adopt the tech but apparently Apple has forked out for 200 to 300 glass-cutting machines to do the task and apparently are being stored at "associated assembly plants."

As for just when we are likely to see the iPhone5, with or without curved glass, the article states…" There has been no timetable yet for the volume production of iPhone 5 as Apple is currently still working with related suppliers including those involved in cover glass, glass cutting, lamination and touch sensors to improve yield rates, the sources commented."

Having said all this, previous rumour has it that the next generation iPhone wouldn't be that much different from the iPhone 4 when it comes to design, so for now at least this latest rumour should be taken with a spoonful of Apple sauce.

iPhone 5 Rumors Spawn Mockups

iPhone 5 Rumors Spawn Mockups

The explosion of rumors that Apple is working on a variety of iPhone designs including smaller ones and iPhones with 4″ screens has spawned a significant amount of speculation and mockups about the possibilities.

In particular, the talk of a 4″ screen and rumors of an "edge to edge" screen resulted in this mockup by mjay2k which shows that a 4″ screen could fit on an existing iPhone 4 sized device by extending the screen to the left/right edges. Similarly a smaller iPhone could use the existing 3.5 screen in a similar fashion.

Another take on the "edge to edge" screen, submitted by a reader. This image tries to look like a "spy" shot, but we believe is just another creative mockup.

Finally, this old design mockup pre-dates the iPhone 4, but shows another take on a large screen format with a reduced prominence of the home button.

iPhone 5 Pictures

If you have been searching the internet looking for iPhone 5 pictures you have probably been disappointed. There are no official pictures of the new iPhone 5 yet and according to the latest rumors Apple are actually working on three different prototypes. One of the prototypes is said to be very similar to the iPhone 4 whilst another is said to contain a slide out keyboard.

Most people have stated that they don't expect to see any radical changes being made to how the iPhone5 will look from the outside especially when you consider the fact that Apple has hardly changed the design of the iPhone from the original to the 3G or the 3GS. The iPhone 4 did see a few changes what with the retina display which has proved to be a massive success.

If you do look for iPhone 5 pictures you are probably just going to see photoshop creations or pictures of the current iphone 5. There are some pictures of the iPhone 5 circulating the internet and the one of the iPhone 5 prototype with the slide out keyboard does look really impressive. Again this is not an official Apple iphone 5 picture so we really can't say for sure if it is the real thing or not. I'm sure as June gets even closer there will be plenty of iPhone 5 pictures released and you will be able to see what the new iPhone 5 is going to look like.

When it comes to iPhone 5 pictures and ones that you really can trust you are better off waiting for Apple to release them. At least then you will know that these are iPhone 5 pictures and you will know exactly what to expect when this next generation iPhone is released.

iPhone 5 to be Verizon-AT&T hybrid, maybe LTE, data caps, says insider

iPhone 5 to be Verizon-AT&T hybrid, maybe LTE, data caps, says insider

If those who know don't speak and those who speak don't know, then Verizon's recent mouthing off about the unannounced iPhone 5, which includes the nugget that it'll be a Verizon-AT&T (CDMA-GSM) hybrid device and still yet might or might not sport 4G LTE, must be taken with a grain of salt. On the one hand, if anyone does know iPhone5 details outside of Apple itself, it's one of the phone's primary carrier partners. But on the other hand, the fact that so many companies can't keep their lips shut about Apple's secrets is reason enough to believe that Steve Jobs and company are smart enough not to give partners like Verizon the entire picture up front. Then again, this was Verizon's CEO Fran Shammo himself sharing purported iPhone 5 details to Reuters, and they're the kind of details which he and his company would know about. So here's what Verizon's honcho claims to know about the iPhone 5g.

First he says there will be a single iPhone 5 which works on both Verizon and AT&T. This is no surprise. The existing Verizon iPhone 4 uses a chip which some who've torn it apart believe could have been used as a GSM-CDMA hybrid chip now, if Apple had wanted to go there. So the notion that a single iPhone 5 will talk to both networks sounds plausible enough to be believable.

But whether the iPhone 5′s hybrid antenna system will include 4G LTE is another story. Verizon says that's still up to Apple, which can be interpreted in multiple ways. Either Apple hasn't made up its mind yet and Verizon's comments are merely reflecting that, or Apple is not planning to include 4G LTE but Verizon is still hoping to push Apple into changing its mind before launch. Yes, major companies, even partners, are not above using public comments like this to attempt to subversively push each other into making certain moves; if Verizon can create enough of an expectation that the iPhone 5 4G, then Apple might have to go ahead and make it happen just to avoid public disappointment otherwise.

Finally, Verizon's CEO spoke on something which is in fact his decision: the brief days of new Verizon iPhone customers getting unlimited data plans are over. Those iPhone users who haven't yet switched from AT&T to Verizon aren't going to be able to take their unlimited data with them if they're planning to wait until the iPhone 5 arrives before moving. This alone will keep a good chunk of AT&T iPhone users standing pat for the iPhone 5 and generations to come, as heavy mobile data users look to avoid getting caught in the prospect of either hefty overage fees or having to think twice every time they go to check their email on the iPhone. iPhone 5 Will Be Thinner and Smaller Says Orange CEO

iPhone 5 Will Be Thinner and Smaller Says Orange CEO

Ah the continuing speculation over what the next generation iPhone will look like carries on today, this time in regards to the earlier rumour of Apple working on a smaller SIM card for their Apple gear and apparently whilst chatting in an interview the CEO of France Telecom/Orange made mention of the iPhone 5 being smaller and thinner.

According to an article over on 9to5 Mac, Stephane Richard, CEO of Orange in an interview with AllthingsD, apparently stated that the next generation iPhone would be smaller and thinner, although the CEO didn't say the iPhone5, he actually referred to the device as the next iPhone.

But as the "next iPhone" is presumed to be the iPhone 5g or iPhone 4S that's being bandied about one can assume he was referring to the iPhone 5 apple, but he didn't say how much smaller and thinner the iOS smartphone would be.

Although this latest rumour does give credence to the possibility of a smaller SIM card, a rumour that came about because Apple wants to make future iPhones thinner and needs the space. Having said that, the only people who really know what Apple is up to is Apple so as usual this should be taken with a pinch of salt.

So what do our readers think, would you like the iPhone 5 to be smaller and thinner, or do you feel Apple shouldn't make the iPhone smaller when others are making their handsets larger?

iPhone 5 Jailbreaking

iPhone 5 Jailbreaking

One of the features that many never liked the IOS iPhone 5 Jailbreaking is the fact that Apple does not allow software upgrade without having to connect to iTunes. So, in fact, need to download the new firmware, connect to the computer and wait for the update.

iphone 5 unlock

According to the words of 9to5Mac however, with the introduction of iPhone 5 Jailbreak IOS 5.0 everything should be just a "bad" memory.
5.0 Obviously the same can not be introduced without wires, as unsupported by the current version of IOS, but all his successors should instead take off without having to require a link to your computer.

This seems iOS push beyond its famous closing time, which requires the transition from iTunes to many, if not almost all, functions. In short, taking place a kind of "androidizzazione" of IOS, which is an update that introduces features similar to those of the OS from Google, which allows devices to upgrade the mountain without the need for a PC / Mac.

Of course, this sounds very interesting, if not for the iPhone 5 Jailbreaking fact that updates introduced by Apple always have a sufficiently large weight. For as you have noticed, the firmware for different devices weigh average 500MB or more and make them available over the air "could lead to use of its 3G network really hard. It would be interesting to see what could be the move to Apple about it: If you decrease the size of the updates, or update, allows the cordless, but only in WiFi.

Apple iPhone 5 may Have Thunderbolt features Possible

Apple iPhone 5 may Have Thunderbolt features Possible

Apple has just introduced Thunderbolt technology into its iMacs and MacBooks so it stands to reason that the iPhone 5 could possibly feature this new port.

The latest news surrounding the Web comes via GizmoCrunch by way of SemiAccurate reporting that the iPhone5 could incorporate Thunderbolt technology, it seems that Mini-Displayport could be replaced with Thunderbolt I/O port (Light Peak) to give customers a much faster data transfer speed as well as charge up times simultaneously.

If you look below this news article we have put a poll together asking what port would you like featured on the upcoming September release Apple iPhone 5, please take a look at the different options and please vote your favourite.

Thunderbolt will give you better speeds than others such as USB2 and USB3, obviously the iPhone 5g will not give you speeds like the MacBook Pro, MacBook air or iMacs that would be crazy to think that, but even so Thunderbolt port on the iPhone 5 would be a stunning addition.

Please check out our poll setup below and vote now, thanks for joining in.

Apple iPhone 5 Release Date – Is it Worth Waiting?

Apple iPhone 5 Release Date – Is it Worth Waiting?

Rumours are circulating as to when the iPhone 5 release date will be. Is it worth waiting for the new iPhone which is rumoured to have HD gaming?

Originally we were expecting the iPhone 5 to be released some time in late June, early July. This would have been consistent with Apple's previous iPhone launches. However the recent release of the white iPhone 4 has led to suggestions that we may not see the iPhone, or iPhone 4GS as it also may be know, until September at the earliest. This is certainly a blow for those who were holding out for the iPhone5.

The question is, is it worth the wait? We can only know for sure when the iPhone 5 features are announced. It is looking very positive for us gamers. Our wish for Flash support is not expected to be granted, as Apple continues in their believe that Flash is a security risk. What we can certainly expect is a higher resolution screen, hopefully HD. The camera is also expected to be significantly improved once more, rendering the need for a separate camera for anyone other than a keen photographer needless. Rumours are that it may be as powerful as 8 MP. Yet what excites us the most is the new dual core processors that will introduced. They will allow significantly more CPU hungry games to be developed. This can only increase the quality of iPhone games further. Before we know it standalone consoles will be needless. We will be able to plug our iPhone into the TV and use it as a console. Well maybe we can dream….

What are you hoping for in the iPhone 5 news?

iPhone 5 benefits from mystery appearance, unlike iP4

iPhone 5 benefits from mystery appearance, unlike iP4

Mystery appearance for the win. When the iPhone 5 debuts, it'll be the first iPhone to surface since 2008 whose appearance won't already be known to the world. Last year the iPhone 4 was released after its prototype had already been exposed by those who found it in a bar. And the year before, the iPhone 3GS turned out to have a physically identical external design to the previous iPhone 3G. That gives Apple the potential for shock value in 2011 which is hasn't had for generations when it comes to its flagship smartphone product. Things could still go wrong. An iPhone5 prototype could once again become lost and found, though such a fiasco happening twice in a row seems unlikely. Or Apple could fail to produce an all-new iPhone 5 and be forced to punt with an "iPhone 4 part two" after all (which would be more like an "iPhone 4 part four" after the release of the original iPhone 4, the Verizon iPhone 4, and the white iPhone 4 in the interim). But assuming Apple manages to dodge both of those unfortunate pitfalls, the iPhone 5 will take the world by surprise when it's unveiled – and that'll count for more than it logically should. What's in a new design? A lot, actually. Consider how much the white iPhone 4 has boosted overall iPhone 4 sales by, despite the fact that it offers literally nothing more than a color change and the fact that it comes so close to the end of the iPhone 4 era. Then again, Apple could do as much harm as good if a redesigned iPhone 5 ends up being not to the public's stylistic liking. Most folks don't talk about it now, but the dirty little secret of the iPhone 4 era is that when that supposed prototype did surface back in 2010, many said it had to be a fake because it was too ugly, too boxy, to un-Apple-like to be a real Apple product. Then later Apple debuted the iPhone 4 and it looked identical to the "ugly boxy" prototype, and yet few called it out for being just that, despite having harshly judged it as such before learning that it really was an Apple design. So with Apple having spent the past year peddling an iPhone 4 design which not only was known about long prior to its launch but was also pre-judged to have been on the unattractive side, Apple has the potential to pull a double whammy with the iPhone 5g: it can shake things up by delivering any new-looking model at all, and shake them up even further by delivering something that's not as unattractive as the model it replaces. All Apple really has to do, seemingly, is to revert back to the curvaceous styling of the iPhone 3G/3GS era, which was widely liked, but of course updated so as to feel like a 2011 product and not a 2009 one. iPhone 5 watch: what iOS 4.3.3 release, white iPhone 4 reveal for iP5

iPhone 5 watch: what iOS 4.3.3 release, white iPhone 4 reveal for iP5

iOS 4.3.3 is here, but it's still a matter of hurry up and wait. It's all happening fast now leading up to the iPhone 5 release, and Apple's plans for it are becoming more clear by its actions. After an entire winter of no iOS updates and no product releases which made it feel as if Apple had simply switched the lights off, the company has re-emerged with a vengeance. Sadly for those who were counting on it, that aggression doesn't appear to include a summer iPhone 5. But here's the good news: with all the fuss Apple has been showing regarding the iPhone in the past month and a half, it's clear that Apple is stepping on the gas pedal in ways not previously seen. Maybe it's the Android threat. Perhaps it's Apple finally adjusting internally to functioning without its CEO. But after spending the winter hibernating, Apple has come out swinging – and most of its focus has been on the iPhone specifically. So what does that mean for the iPhone 5?

For one thing, the sudden spate of iOS releases (4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, and now 4.3.3) in what feels like a five minute span mean that the company is, at the very least, highly motivated in the iOS department. But the real proof of Apple's iPhone aggression has come in the form of new hardware. The fact that there apparently won't be an iPhone 5 ready by summer is one way of looking at it. But the reality is that with the Verizon iPhone 4 followed by the white iPhone 4, released almost on top of each other at a time of year when Apple has never released iPhone hardware, it's clear Apple is ready to leave behind the old blueprint of releasing the new iPhone and iOS in the summer and then standing pat as far as releases for the next twelve months. Now it's all about hyper-kinetic iOS releases, pushing out new iPhone hardware year round, and laying the groundwork for what at this rate must be a stunning iPhone 5 generational leap.

And how's that, you say? Apple is turning its own tables by attempting to prop up iPhone 4 sales this late in the generation; those who buy an iPhone 4 now will be hard pressed to cough up for an iPhone 5 (at unsubsidized pricing, no less) less than half a year from now. So Apple must be so certain that the iPhone 5 is going to be a to-die-for model that it believes at least some folks will actually buy an iPhone 5 at launch even if they're still tearing the shrink-wrap off their iPhone 4. And that means Apple must really have something up its sleeve. Put another way: if the "iPhone 5″ were going to merely be a rehash of the iPhone 4 along the lines of an iPhone 4GS, Apple would have killed the white iPhone 4 and simply released said "iPhone 5″ next month. Instead, the company is buying itself the time it needs to finish whatever job it has going on behind the scenes, on what must be from-the-ground-up reimagining of the iPhone experience. The effort that Apple is publicly investing into the iPhone 4 at present is merely a sign of how confident Apple is that it can still promptly kill and bury the iPhone 4 in favor of what comes next when the time comes. iPhone 5G Set To Break The Smartphone Mould

iPhone 5G Set To Break The Smartphone Mould

Apple are set to rock the smart phone industry with the latest addition of their new model, the iPhone 5 which is also know as the iPhone 5G.

The Apple iPhone has been a long standing mobile favourite for much of the globe but the new concept will include features that simply couldn't be offered within the iPhone 3, iPhone 3GS or the iPhone 4.

Although the phones have brought a new insight into the possible capabilities of smart phones within the market, that doesn't mean that they have been without their faults and problems, taking into consideration the iPhone 4 and the problems with the reception on the phone depending on where the user held the phone.

The new breed of iPhone 5 or iPhone 5G has been invested into heavily, making sure that all the steps are taken to remove faults like these that could prevent users from buying the phone rather than a rival phone such as a RIM Blackberry.

With the general public more than excited about the prospect of a new iPhone 5, the rumours surrounding the features that the latest in the iPhone series has to offer have already begun to break into the online community, with some of them leaving consumers more than willing to trade their current smart phone in as soon as they can get their hands on the latest iPhone 5 or iPhone 5G.

Rumours currently making their way around the internet in relation to the iPhone 5 feature such stories as a brand new form for the latest concept, meaning that the iPhone 5g will offer a completely different design to the widely available iPhones already on the market.

Others include that the new iPhone 5 could feature a mobile wallet which would replicate the usages of a digital e-wallet meaning that you can send and spend money through your handset, removing the need to access your computer to purchase those iPhone 5G accessories you can't live without.

With so many features and additions being tipped to be included into the latest version of the iPhone, people are also trying to speculate in relation to the release date of the new iPhone 5 / iPhone 5G model.

So far it seems that Apple have not passed comment on the expected release date but with a seemingly regular pattern of release happening within the UK summer months, interested buyers are once again gearing up for the news that the iPhone 5 could be theirs this coming summer.

So with the demand expected to be high and the completely new and what has been described as evolutionary features set to be placed into the iPhone 5, you have to believe that the latest iPhone 5G model will cost you more than the present models that are on the market but it seems that there is no evidence to confirm that suspicion other than the fact that the UK market will have to deal with the increase in  VAT which is set to come into force next month.
